This essay, originally published in the Sept 1990 Notices of the AMS, discusses problems of our mathematical education system that often stem from widespread misconceptions by well-meaning people of the process of learning mathematics. The essay also discusses ideas for fixing some of the problems. Most of what I wrote in 1990 remains equally applicable today.

An interesting exploration of the failures in maths education suggests that it needs to be more relatable and broad, rather than resembling a tall unsupported tower of knowledge. The approach should involve explaining maths from a higher level and then working down into specific maths concepts.

Francis Fukuyama wrote an excellent series of articles that try to understand the deep state.
